January 2021:  Del Albright has launched a new series of online workshops befitting a world of "Zoom" type meetings and calls.  Each workshop/training session will be a Zoom meeting or webinar with easy sign-up.

The workshops will cover subjects like letter writing, public speaking, advanced politics, recreational leadership, supervising volunteers, running better meetings, communication skills, strategic planning and more.

All training will be announced on Facebook and other social networks.   Participants can dial in with or without camera.  Call in by phone is an option too.

10 TIPS FOR VOLUNTEER LEADERS

10 THINGS TO KEEP HANDY AND REMEMBER AS LEADERS OF VOLUNTEERS

By the nature of the title "volunteer leader," there is never enough time to do all the things you want to do or thought you should do.  Being a volunteer is a part-time job at best.   Thus, we must learn to prioritize and get those things done that accomplish the most bang for our buck and get the most action out of others we influence. In all cases, to lead volunteers, we must learn to inspire, motivate, and facilitate action if we want to be successful (and keep trails open).

Here are 10 tips to remember and keep handy as a volunteer leader, always strapped for time, always on some sort of time-crunch, and never fully supported for what you need to do.  (smile).

1.  Deliver what you promise, and don't promise what you can't deliver.

2.  For speeches, remember to tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them.

3.  When dealing with bureaucracy, never take the first three "no's."  Be persistent in what you want.

4.  A leader doing one thing gets one thing done; a leader motivating (supervising) 7 people to action gets 7 things done.

5.  The Leadership Triangle reminds us to Inspire, motivate, and facilitate volunteers.

6.   A complaint is never legitimate until it is voiced to someone who can fix it.  

7.  Aerobic listening is more than active listening -- give and receive feedback with volunteers.

8.  Draw a picture -- most volunteers are visual.  Give them something to "see" what is in your mind you want done.

9.  A leader makes things happen; as they say, lead, follow, or get out of the way.

10.  Never forget that a volunteer is giving you their most precious commodity -- their time. Treat it with respect and never waste it.

Leading volunteers to victory can be learned; you are not necessarily "born" with that ability.  With a volunteer, you are asking them to do something- not bossing them around.  Use your nice voice and be patient.  And most importantly, in any volunteer effort, always say THANK YOU when the job is done.

The one-of-a-kind hands-on landuse and leadership boot camp, Volunteer Leader & Land Stewardship (VLLS) Workshop is scheduled for the weekend of Feb. 28th, 2015, developed and presented by Del Albright. Student applications are available now to get your name in the hat early for limited seating.  Apply even if you aren’t sure you can make it, but want to be kept in the list of available seats.  35 students are expected to attend this workshop.

VLLS 2015 is going to be the revival of volunteer training that started in 2004 to develop more leaders in volunteer organizations/clubs fighting for landuse, trails and access to public lands. This will be workshop #5 since the course started as the follow-up, hands-on portion of online training, Recreational Leadership Training Course (RLTC at www.rltc.biz).

LEARN: There is no other training like this in the country!  Learn tips and tricks galore in landuse, leadership, and supervision, including:

The BLM came up with two plans for the area that would mark trails and put existing ones on the map. Now they are coming up with Alternative maps that do not make much sense and do not match up with what the locals think should be done. We need LETTERS from you, please.

The fourth leadership training class of the Volunteer Leader & Land Stewardship (VLLS) Workshop graduated on Nov. 16th. at Ghost Mountain Ranch, Pollock Pines, CA. 18 graduates hit the street with new OHV skills and have become part of a unique team of folks striving to save our sports and access across the country.
