The Tierra Del Sol (TDS) Four-Wheel Drive Club of San Diego was founded in 1962. Leading the way in fighting for keeping trails open and responsible four-wheeling, while nurturing youngsters to join the fun the right way, TDS is genuinely a remarkable club.

Tierra Del Sol is one of southern California’s largest not-for-profit, family-oriented 4x4 clubs.  TDS meets monthly and offers four-wheeling, camping, and other events suitable for the entire family.

Every year since 1962 they support the local economies where they recreate as well as numerous charities through their annual event, the TDS Desert Safari – the longest-running off-road event in the nation. The club has donated heavily to assist with lawsuits around Ocotillo Wells SVRA. Each year TDS gives away thousands of dollars to various land use organizations, both local and national.

History

After WW II, a new type of recreation was being born in the late 1940s and 50s, embraced by a small group of hardy men eager to see what our challenging countryside had to offer, and the term “ jeeping” became the definitive name for “four-wheeling.”

In those early years, a “Search and Rescue” team of local men with citizen band radios gained an intimate knowledge of the local backcountry through their rescue work. Some decided to forego “Search and Rescue” and concentrate on adventure and exploration. Two of these men were Roy Pruitt and Bozzy Willis.

Bozzy had always worked closely with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where his father had been employed. Bozzy’s knowledge of the Indians, their trails, culture, and history made him an instant leader of the small band of early four-wheelers.

Eventually, the membership evolved into a club named Tierra Del Sol.  Tierra Del Sol 4 Wheel Drive Club legally incorporated in August 1962 as a non-profit organization and some of the early names are still part of the TDS roster: Albrecht, Arnold, Branch, Collins, Fertig, Londo, Nielson, Rappold, and Stough

The club continues to exemplify friendship at its best and set the example nationwide.

TDS Desert Safari News 2016

TDS New Location; New Fun; Huge Raffle; and New Obstacle Course

This year TDS Desert Safari is located down the road 8 miles east of the old location at the Training Area. CA State Parks are not issuing permits this year so don't blame the club for the move. 2016 Safari HQ is at Johnson's Landing,  a private RV park facility.

There is limited dry camping north of the HQ. Camping and normal recreation (that doesn’t require a permit) is still available on the State Park lands. TDS club folks are building an obstacle course at the new HQ, complete with a mud pit. And, as a bonus this year Johnson’s Landing will have a BEER GARDEN for your enjoyment. 

Let’s not forget the Fireworks Show! The club promises it will be LOUD and in-your-face fun this year. Finally, our famous Raffle is now up to $150,000.

One more note: as you get close to camp, dial your radio to FM 99.9 to hear the club broadcasting directions/information about the new HQ.

Subject: TDS Statement and PDF of State Parks Demurrer

 

California State Parks has filed a response to the lawsuit that wants to limit open riding in the Ocotillo Wells SVRA (OWSVRA). The State has a filed what is called a demurrer. The basic thrust of the demurrer is that Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) and The Desert Protective Council (DPC) have improperly invited the court to intervene and tell State Parks how to run the OWSVRA, something the law does not allow.  In order to pursue this lawsuit, PEER/DPC must identify a particular ministerial (non-discretionary) task, required by law, that State Parks has failed to perform; and PEER/DPC has not done so.

The hearing regarding the demurrer is scheduled for December 13, 2013.  If the demurrer is granted, the entire case would be dismissed. Tierra Del Sol's attorney has decided to wait until the results of the hearing are known before moving forward. Keep in mind that we lose nothing by waiting. If the court denies the demurrer and allows the case to move forward we are still able to intervene. This is simply a matter of a couple anti-public access groups wanting to tell State Parks how to do its job. No need to muddy the waters further. Thank you for your continued support and interest! TIERRA DEL SOL CLUB GETS IT DONE AGAIN

TDS Desert Safari was a huge success again....over 1700 registered vehicles and over $160,000 in raffle prizes, with each prize package worth over $1000.  Thousands of folks were in the raffle audience.  It was amazing.  The weather held out pretty good for the most part.  But it is the desert, so there was a little wind here and there.  On the other hand, we also got sun burnt.  :)

We set up a "landuse compound" not far from the vendor show with United Four Wheel Drive Association, BlueRibbon Coalition, Calif. Assoc. of 4Wheel Drive Clubs and the Access Army all together.  It was a lot of fun with many hours of landuse talks and strategizing.

Stacie found a new "toy" that we brought home -- a 1972 Jeep Commando in marvelous shape, with an AMC V-8 304. Power steering and power brakes too.  Sweet.  It was quite the draw at the booth.

Next up for us is Cabela's Spring show and the Reno Off Road Motorports Expo.

LANDUSE VIKING DEBUTS IN COLOR FOR NEW BOOK

"Brock" the Landuse Viking "shielding public lands from closure" in color!

Ryan Williams of RTW Graphics created our new landuse book character, "Brock" as we sometimes call him.  First he was in black and white; but here he is in color.  What do you think, is he cool or what?

He will be on our book cover (released March 1st at TDS Desert Safari).  But look closely at what he is protecting and how he is doing it.  There are a lot of messages here.

Our landuse Viking represents what most organized recreation groups are doing these days, especially national umbrella groups like the BlueRibbon Coalition. Be sure to JOIN as your first step in helping this bad boy do his job.  He totally represents what Del & Stacie stand for in their fight as Team Albright.

TDS Safari and Death Valley Desert

For the last couple weeks, I've been a couple different places in So. CA and So. NV, and here are a few highlights.  First TDS, Desert Safari.  What an awesome event this year, and a great cause for helping to save trails and keep our sport alive.

There were thousands of participants at Safari, and part of the fun is the first trail ride morning when everyone lines up near camp to start the day.

Event staff and helpers get around in whatever it takes.  The desert was full of side by sides, quads and dirt bikes, besides the 1200 or so registerred 4x4 rigs in the event.

The "raffleman" did a great job and he had plenty of helpers.  With about $122k in prizes, the average prize was around $800 EACH.  Totally awesome.  About 2500 folks filled seats at the raffle, with the 100 plus vendors surrounding them.  It ia always quite the sight.

Here, Greg Mulkey of Raceline Wheels (Allied) gave away the first prize package with his bitchen beadlocks as part of the deal.  Raceline Wheels is also one of my Jeep sponsors and a proud sponsor of BlueRibbon Coalition.

After TDS, I headed to Death Valley area, with our camp headquarters in Beatty, NV, just the other side of Daylight Pass and the town of Rhyolite.  My club joined me and we had a few days of fun wheeling.

Learning to Geocache -- which is a kick in the pants by the way...an adult treasure hunt.  Mike Stoller here is our champion cacher -- well, Tami his wife is, but Mike seems to be in all the pics.  Way fun stuff to do.

Mark Foley from my club got "engaged" to geocaching in DV, with this ring he found in the cache.  Ok, he put the ring back but still enjoyed the "engagement."

This is what the "settling" of the west, and the 49ers, were all about.  Can you imagine??

I found this fixer-upper in Rhyolite.  Yup, it's an Impala.  Needs work.

If you've never done Death Valley, I highly recommend you put this on your list of adventures.  I would be happy to point you in the direction of some pretty cool stuff.  This trip was my 27th week-long venture in this marvelous place.  Yea, I know...27 years...I must have seen it all, right?  Nope.  Still finding a few new things to see each year inspite of the National Park Service and mis-guided members of Congress making way too much of it Wilderness.
