DISCOVERERS, DEVELOPERS, AND MERCHANTS OF PUBLIC LANDS

DISCOVERERS, DEVELOPERS, AND MERCHANTS

How the old west gold mining and modern land use are similar

By Del Albright

The old prospector no longer gave a hoot about all the talk of getting rich during the 1849 gold rush. No matter how he looked at it, it was dang hot and ugly mean in the western desert, and he’d not had a decent drink of water or a good meal in days. He was hot and tired; his mule was dragging, and his supplies were about gone. He was having about as much fun as a jackrabbit at a coyote picnic.

With no gold in his pockets, he gave up for the day and settled in next to a ledge of rocks that provided some shade. He tipped back his sweaty, worn-out hat and began to collect a few rocks to make a small fire ring. The last of his hard-tack would taste mighty fine about now and he still had one can of beans to heat up. Then it struck him like a mule kick in the butt! His fire ring of rocks was the best gold ore he’d ever seen. He was suddenly going to be a rich man living the life of luxury.

The old prospector was a “discoverer.”    Discoverers are those who find the ore or the strike but usually don’t have the capital to develop a gold (or silver) mine. Sometimes in the 1800s it was common to have to sink a shaft 200 – 300 feet or more to get the “good stuff.”   So the discoverer would sell out to the developer, who did have the money, manpower, and backing to fully develop the mine.

Of course, all this while the merchants- the businessmen who brought the shovels, beans, bullets, and other supplies that miners needed – were establishing the long-term trade and supply routes to build this country while supporting the mining development.  It all came together: the discoverers, the developers, and the merchants.  Today, landuse is not much different.

In short, the discoverers in landuse are the local folks who are “prospecting” their way through the maze of government, just trying to recreate and enjoy the great outdoors with their toys.  Discoverers find problems (bad government decisions, unnecessary road closures, unwarranted gates, etc.), then bring in the developers (larger landuse organizations) to help out.  Merchants are the off-road businesses of today who support the developers.  It all comes together – just like in the mining days of the “old west.”

Allow me to break this down for you a bit more.  Let’s take the example of a “local Joe,” just a lone-ranger kind of recreationist, who finds that his favorite trail is being closed up tighter than a tick on a hound dog.  He makes a few phone calls; writes a couple letters; and gets the typical run-around. So then he moves it up a notch and finds a local club to engage in the fight.  “Local Joe” is our prospector who gets things started with his local knowledge, expertise, and passion – he’s the discoverer.

Soon it becomes evident that professional help and perhaps even legal advice might be crucial in saving this trail, so the locals reach up to the bigger organizations at the state, regional and national levels – the developers with the money (hopefully everyone has been joining and supporting these bigger organizations so they do have some strength).  Naturally, the merchants – the off-road businesses – are in the game as well by supporting the big orgs and clubs out there prospecting and developing to help keep the gold mine (the sport) alive and well.

It all comes together, just like in the old mining days of the American west.  Well, that is to say, if we’re all working together, making the system work, and finding unity in our voices.

If you read my writing very often, you know I love metaphors and analogies.  This piece is no different.  Here you go.  Our freedom to explore is a treasure in this great country of ours.  Our recreation is a gold mine, if you will.  Be a “discoverer” who works to prospect for new ways to keep our sports alive and our trails open.  Join and support the “developers,” who are the big orgs helping to support you and your local trails.  Finally, buy from “merchants” who support our local, state, and national efforts as we all prospect for a brighter, gold-filled future.  J

WHAT THE WISE MAN SAID ABOUT JEEP TICKETS

CALIF. 4WHEEL DRIVE ASSOCIATION RAFFLE

What the Wise Man Said About Jeep Tickets

By Del Albright, Sustainable Motorized Recreation Advocate

Once Upon A Time…

"My fingers were ragged from climbing a jagged mountain peak, only to find a wise, old man sitting there, legs crossed, deep in thought.

“Old man,” I said, “what are you doing here and so absorbed in concentration?”

“Son,” he mumbled, “it’s the tickets.”

“Tickets,” I exclaimed, “what the heck are you talking about?”

“How many Win-A-Jeep tickets should I buy?  This will be a good year,” he decreed.

I asked, “What’s so great about these tickets and this Jeep?”

“Well,” he slowly explained, “even if I don’t win, I’m helping this great outfit save trails and keep roads open.  But if I do win, I can get the heck off this mountain!”

That did it right there.  I scrambled down that mountain, found a WiFi hot spot, logged in, and bought my share of tickets.

You should do the same!

The End.

Now the rest of the story.  This will be a fantastic build with adventure written all over it.  And the time is right now. You can get tickets before the build is even done, but you won't regret it.  It's always a great vehicle. If tickets are not yet up, just keep checking back. Get yours at http://www.cal4wheel.com/win

Thanks for helping us keep our four-wheeling sports and alive and our trails open.

CAL4WHEEL PRESIDENT ELECTIONS 2022

JOSH EPSTEIN FOR CAL4WHEEL PRESIDENT, 2022

Convention Election Opportunities and a New Future for Cal4

By Jim Bramham with Del Albright

It is just a couple of weeks until the Cal 4-Wheel Convention in Visalia.  We are glad to see registration is so strong and there is excitement about an opportunity to see one another again.  Elections are upon us.

Del and I have wrestled with the many opportunities facing our Association and we see a need for clear leadership that will bridge to a new generation. We feel the trick today is to preserve our past, enhance what we have now, and continue to build a stronger future.  Josh Epstein will bring a contemporary approach to shaping our Association.

Jack Chapman stepped up in trying times and has accomplished major goals for Cal4. Jack has done a great job keeping us pointed in the right direction and our fiscal affairs in order. The uncertainty and everchanging complexity of the last several years has made the Board of Directors’ job more difficult than ever.  A huge thank you goes to both Jack and all the Board.

Additionally, the Association is blessed with an amazing cadre of Past Presidents. These folks each served the Association in an extremely high capacity, and each faced different challenges. We are so fortunate to have this brain trust and corporate memory available to the BOD and our membership.

Our Association has enormous challenges laying ahead. These challenges are not just regulatory or land use but also how to define Cal4 to an ever-changing demographic that is outdoor recreation.  We support and represent a niche of this fast-growing segment of our society. We must find new ways to be relevant, inclusive, and realistic as we put our 60 years of background to bear on what will become the future of our sport.

Over the past several years, we have worked closely with Josh and witnessed the growth of his knowledge and dedication to our Association. He has been receptive to input, a link to the younger crowd, and is respectful of our past.

We support Josh in his run for the presidency and hope you will give him your full consideration. The future is going to happen to us whether we plan on it or not. We look forward to supporting Josh as the Association moves forward and expands.

CA OFF ROAD 4x4 EVENTS

CALIF 4WD ASSOC HAS EVENTS IN YOUR AREA

Support the sport by attending events in your state.

By Del Albright, Life Member

One of the best ways to support your sport, make sure we have a sport in the future, and get some wheeling in at the same time is to attend events in your state association, in this case the Calif. 4Wheel Drive Association (www.cal4wheel.com).

Cal4Wheel has several events run by dedicated volunteers who work hard to help the Association grow.  Do your part by attending those you can fit in.  It's another way of doing the main things that keep our sport alive:  Join, Donate and Volunteer.  In this case, volunteer your time and rig for a fun weekend on the trails around great people.

WORRIED ABOUT THE RUBICON TRAIL

IS GOVERNMENT LISTENING TO THE USERS?

I left my leadership position in Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR) and the Rubicon Trail Foundation (RTF) a few years back, thinking that we had laid a positive foundation to continue these incredible efforts to keep the Rubicon Trail open to all of us...all year; for all types of rigs; with challenges for us all.

NOT THE CASE!!!

I am sorely disappointed in the way the trail has changed in the last few years, and I am not afraid to step up and say that government is NOT listening to the users.  Not in this case.  Something is wrong and we need to bring some slap down on the deaf ones who "govern" our use of public lands in the case of the Rubicon Trail.

From the  blowing of the Gatekeeper, conducted like an ambush in war, unbeknownst to users and unspoken in public forums beforehand; to the resizing and near paving of Little Sluice in spite of comprehensive surveys and public input against such maneuvers behind the scenes; to the changing and possible closure of Soup (Bowl, Kitchen).  It is NOT what the users have asked for and have said in public forum. Government is NOT listening.

And do we have some of our own supporting these insidious, sneaky, behind the scenes moves?  I'm not sure; but I am sure that the folks I talk to, do NOT support these radical changes to the Rubicon Trail.

Oh, let's ask ourselves who has invested tens of thousand of hours in hard work, sweat, blood and back-breaking work in making this trail a trail for all?  Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR), that is who. Since the first work party in the summer of 2001, and hundreds of work parties since then, every summer....FOTR has earned the key to this trail.  Why does Government think they know best on this one?

FOTR earned tens of thousands of dollars in grant money for government agencies to help us manage the trail, maintain the trail, and mitigate the issues with erosion and use. So why would not government LISTEN to the users in how the trail should look in the future? YOU GOT ME.

Here's my suggestion for you if this does not wrap your winch the right way:  1) make sure your membership is current in fighting outfits like BlueRibbon Coalition and Cal4wheel; 2) make sure you're participating in Google groups for FOTR with your voice being heard; and 3) donate to those groups fighting for access THE RIGHT WAY, for you.
More on BRC here at http://www.sharetrails.org
More on Cal4 here at http://www.cal4wheel.com
More on Del at http://www.delalbright.com

Whatever you do; do NOT let your voice go unheard.  Back it with donations and memberships.  Be in the game.  It is OUR public lands we are talking about.

TAP TOUR FALL 2012 ANNOUNCED

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact:  Del Albright, del@delalbright.com

TRAIL ACCESS PARTNERSHIP TOUR (TAPT) FALL 2012
Landuse Tour Open to the Public
Join Del & Stacie Albright on a landuse, trail-saving adventure!

Businesses, partners and off-road enthusiasts are invited to join Blue Ribbon Coalition’s Del & Stacie Albright for a fun convoy, dedicated to trail access awareness bringing customers and businesses together in the spirit of landuse.  The tour begins with the annual meeting of the North American Motorized Recreation Council (NAMRC), and the SEMA show in Las Vegas, NV; next up is the 32nd annual Hump n Bump in Logandale, NV, followed by a few days exploring Death Valley, ending with Panamint Valley Days hosted by the Calif. Assoc. of 4Wheel Drive Clubs!

The TAP Tour embodies key components of the BlueRibbon Coalition Mission -- to provide leadership in responsible recreation and empower members to secure, protect and expand recreational access.

You are invited to jump in for all or part of the tour.  The Tour motto is: we will NOT be “tapped” out of our trail access!  Our goal is to use this Tour to provide a forum for businesses, clubs, individuals and land use professionals to share a connection and exchange strategies for a positive future in off-road recreation, while building support for organized recreation.

Additional adventure stops and area orientations may be included as Tour planning continues.  Businesses will be showcased and everyone involved will be supporting landuse just by being there (for all or part).

Support landuse; have fun; hang with off-road businesses and enjoy campfire stories that will be unequalled!   Evening sessions will include landuse seminars, membership building motivational speeches, leadership tips, and vendor showcasing with tech tips as appropriate.  Several off-road 4x4 clubs will be joining us as we travel along.  In between the organized events, the rest of this Tour will be nothing too structured; just fun tagging along with each other and special invites to dinners, meetings, factory tours, trail cleanups and more. All we ask is that you support landuse and responsible trail access to be part of our Tour.

RSVP to Del Albright (del@delalbright.com) or on Facebook even if you only want to keep up with the fun and plans.  Facebook page and RSVP can be done here: http://www.facebook.com/events/250626235039729/

With the elections pending and a whole new fight ahead of us to preserve our off-road sports and save our backcountry access, we need a flush of memberships, right now.  Please join us.

This is a partial list, but an important one, to help you decide where to put your memberships and support.  Racers and off-roaders should join their State and Regional Associations that best represent your sport.

Businesses need to join several outfits, national, regional and state level, depending on where your biggest customer base resides.

START HERE: https://www.sharetrails.org/support/join-or-contribute

BlueRibbon Coalition supports and fights for ALL TRAILS, and ALL SPORTS, nationwide, at the grassroots level.  I recommend EVERYONE be part of BRC.  Start there, the add on.  BRC is the outfit Stacie and I work for full time.

California folks, or businesses with a large customer base in CA need to join this family-oriented 4x4 association.  With over 50 years of history, CA4WDC is fighting daily with professional landuse folks to maintain our access.

Visit and support Cal4 at http://www.cal4wheel.com

Dirt biker folks and businesses need to start with the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), at

http://www.ama-cycle.org

4x4 folks should consider joining and support United Four Wheel Drive Associations as the national sport-specific group for jeeps, trucks, and 4x4's.

Visit and support UFWDA at http://www.ufwda.org

Businesses in the off-road industry should consider joining the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA), a trade association dedicated to help businesses preserve and promote recreational access and the off-road sports.

Join and support ORBA here:  http://www.orba.biz

There are many more choices and this list is just a start.  Every state has outfits fighting for the sport and our trails.  Write if you need more links or help deciding.

LABOR DAY AT HIGH SIERRA POKER RUN

CAL4'S HIGH SIERRA POKER RUN ON AGENDA FOR LABOR DAY WITH BFGOODRICH TIRES!

We will represent BlueRibbon Coalition and our fellow members of the Calif. Assoc. of 4Wheel Drive Clubs at the High Sierra Poker Run up by the Dusy Trail out of Shaver Lake, CA this Labor Day weekend.

We'll tackle the Swamp Lake trail near the Dusy, and spend time on Bald Mountain and a special trail run with BFGoodrich Tires to the Mirror Lake Trail for the Outstanding Trails program.  SWEET.

BFG, Tread Lightly and United Four Wheel Drive Assoc. have chosen the Mirror Lake trail as one of this year's recipients for the grant money awarded to Outstanding Trails.  The Lock & Low 4WD Club of Visalia will be there as the proud "adopters" of the Mirror Lake Trail.

Our partners from Trail-Gear will also be there in support as they love these trails as well (and support landuse).  Stacie is bringing the Land Cruiser that was seriously modified by Trail-Gear folks.  Should be a fun weekend, hope you can join us.

We are only 3 weeks away from our 51st Annual Convention and we need you to sign up right away. The Convention Committee has been working very hard to put together a stimulating, informative and fun filled convention program. Allow me to give you an idea of what we have planned for you and tell you how easy it is to registered.

The Convention kicks off Friday morning with a with a Tread Lightly Training seminar at 8 am (pre-registration required – see www.cal4wheel.com for more info). At 6:30 pm, in keeping with the convention theme, the call to dinner will be an incredible parade including a Color Guard, Bag Pipes and the playing of Taps and the honoring of 4 wheelers who have served our country. During and following dinner there will be several Guest speakers/presentations including the presentation of CA4WDC’s annual awards. All this leads up to the drawing for the Sweepstakes Vehicle.

Article: The Future is Calling

Please feel free to use this article (land use and access) if you want, and are OHV friendly. I would appreciate a link or a copy if you do decide to use it. A nice photo accompanies this if you’d like it as well (just let me know).
Thanks, Del

The Future Is Calling.
Who will be there to answer?

By Del Albright, BlueRibbon Coalition Ambassador

Activists in off-road recreation seem to be an aging group – no offense intended. Many of us are “gray hairs” and many are working so hard that “burnout” may cause some premature aging. I worry that not enough young folks are taking up the torch and carrying the flame. When the future calls, will we have folks there to answer?

I was enjoying the business of an annual convention recently of the Calif. Assoc. of 4WD Clubs when I noticed long-time activist Jim Bramham (featured in accompanying photo) sitting nearby with his grandson, Oscar (2 and 1/2 years old). I swung the camera towards Oscar and said, “Hello.” Upon hearing those familiar words, Oscar picked up his play calculator like it was a telephone and answered me back. Cute.
