WHAT THE WISE MAN SAID ABOUT JEEP TICKETS

CALIF. 4WHEEL DRIVE ASSOCIATION RAFFLE

What the Wise Man Said About Jeep Tickets

By Del Albright, Sustainable Motorized Recreation Advocate

Once Upon A Time…

"My fingers were ragged from climbing a jagged mountain peak, only to find a wise, old man sitting there, legs crossed, deep in thought.

“Old man,” I said, “what are you doing here and so absorbed in concentration?”

“Son,” he mumbled, “it’s the tickets.”

“Tickets,” I exclaimed, “what the heck are you talking about?”

“How many Win-A-Jeep tickets should I buy?  This will be a good year,” he decreed.

I asked, “What’s so great about these tickets and this Jeep?”

“Well,” he slowly explained, “even if I don’t win, I’m helping this great outfit save trails and keep roads open.  But if I do win, I can get the heck off this mountain!”

That did it right there.  I scrambled down that mountain, found a WiFi hot spot, logged in, and bought my share of tickets.

You should do the same!

The End.

Now the rest of the story.  This will be a fantastic build with adventure written all over it.  And the time is right now. You can get tickets before the build is even done, but you won't regret it.  It's always a great vehicle. If tickets are not yet up, just keep checking back. Get yours at http://www.cal4wheel.com/win

Thanks for helping us keep our four-wheeling sports and alive and our trails open.

WHAT WILL SAVE THE FUTURE OF MOTORSPORTS?

Saving the Future of Motorized Recreation

What Your Membership to Organizations Accomplishes

By Del Albright, Sustainable Motorized Recreation Advocate

Author Del Albright is joined by Don Amador, career Recreation Advocate

Saving trails and the whole sport of motorized recreation depends on many factors, but without those factors, our trails and our sports will be in jeopardy. Primary in the list is local club involvement in issues and organizational growth. Without local membership support and involvement, a larger umbrella group (state, regional, or national) will push water uphill and waste precious resources.

From what we’ve seen, working with boards at all levels, before an organization or group can invest time, money, and staff in an issue, it must assess the value of the level of service to its members.

Noted land use advocate Don Amador crafted this diagram of how many organizations develop a strategy for level of service:

The outcome (middle of the diagram) estimates the level of service a group can invest in an issue. This outcome includes member support, priority/timing of the issue, and the potential value to the group. A larger organization cannot take these factors lightly to survive long term.

A great example is the Rubicon Trail.  Twenty+ years ago, local clubs and users banded together to save the trail from closure. Immediately, state, regional, and national groups recognized this local involvement and jumped in to help fight for the trail. The value returned to the larger groups included membership growth and broader recognition. Everyone won! It worked. The level of service from larger organizations matched the local interest!

We have heard members complain that their state/regional/national representatives do not do enough for them or their trail. At the same time, that member and the local club have done nothing to help the overall cause/issue. It’s like the blame game – pointing fingers instead of putting boots on the ground. The level of service from bigger groups hinges on locals being involved and invested. It works both ways to create a sustainable future for motorized recreation.

In our estimation, the future of motorized recreation depends on a few simple things and some proven formulas.

 1.   More unity in organized recreation leadership, including better communications and fewer turf battles.

 2.   Finding the money to get more full-time people doing land use and leading volunteers.

 3.    More training for volunteers who don’t know how to cope with government regulations, safety and EPA requirements, and paperwork.

 4.   A centralized source of information and coordination nationwide that people can trust to bring us all together so the messages are not disjointed but orchestrated for future wins.

 5.   Legal strength – with attorneys who know land use and are available to all.

 6.   Finding the key to getting people to join organized groups and not just be virtual.

 7.   Getting past egos and personalities in OHV recreation.

Focusing positive energy on the factors mentioned here will save the future of motorized recreation while finding reciprocity between local interests and larger group investment. Simply said, we must always work together, in cooperation, and with a positive focus towards a sustainable future.

NEW LEADERSHIP AT CAL4WHEEL

New President of the California Four Wheel Drive Association, Josh Epstein.

By Del Albright

When an Association over 60 years old chooses a young blood to run the show, with a ton of old wise ones to help guide and nurture him, I am encouraged that we can make a difference in keeping our trails open and our sport alive.
Very importantly, we can perhaps build that bridge to the younger generation and the UTV/side x side crowd, who are very much a part of our four-wheeling world.
But do not get me wrong, without the guidance of past Presidents, past Board members and club elders, our forward progress would not be healthy. It takes a team!!!
Joshua Epstein of JEP Autoworks has stepped up to be President of the cal4wheel state Association. I told him flat out that I will always have advice if he wants it. Heck I've been off-roading and four wheeling for 60 years. But following it will be his choice (or not). And we shook on it. Mutual respect. That is how club elders and old ones can interact with the younger folks wanting to step up. What is your take on this?

CAL4WHEEL PRESIDENT ELECTIONS 2022

JOSH EPSTEIN FOR CAL4WHEEL PRESIDENT, 2022

Convention Election Opportunities and a New Future for Cal4

By Jim Bramham with Del Albright

It is just a couple of weeks until the Cal 4-Wheel Convention in Visalia.  We are glad to see registration is so strong and there is excitement about an opportunity to see one another again.  Elections are upon us.

Del and I have wrestled with the many opportunities facing our Association and we see a need for clear leadership that will bridge to a new generation. We feel the trick today is to preserve our past, enhance what we have now, and continue to build a stronger future.  Josh Epstein will bring a contemporary approach to shaping our Association.

Jack Chapman stepped up in trying times and has accomplished major goals for Cal4. Jack has done a great job keeping us pointed in the right direction and our fiscal affairs in order. The uncertainty and everchanging complexity of the last several years has made the Board of Directors’ job more difficult than ever.  A huge thank you goes to both Jack and all the Board.

Additionally, the Association is blessed with an amazing cadre of Past Presidents. These folks each served the Association in an extremely high capacity, and each faced different challenges. We are so fortunate to have this brain trust and corporate memory available to the BOD and our membership.

Our Association has enormous challenges laying ahead. These challenges are not just regulatory or land use but also how to define Cal4 to an ever-changing demographic that is outdoor recreation.  We support and represent a niche of this fast-growing segment of our society. We must find new ways to be relevant, inclusive, and realistic as we put our 60 years of background to bear on what will become the future of our sport.

Over the past several years, we have worked closely with Josh and witnessed the growth of his knowledge and dedication to our Association. He has been receptive to input, a link to the younger crowd, and is respectful of our past.

We support Josh in his run for the presidency and hope you will give him your full consideration. The future is going to happen to us whether we plan on it or not. We look forward to supporting Josh as the Association moves forward and expands.

CA OFF ROAD 4x4 EVENTS

CALIF 4WD ASSOC HAS EVENTS IN YOUR AREA

Support the sport by attending events in your state.

By Del Albright, Life Member

One of the best ways to support your sport, make sure we have a sport in the future, and get some wheeling in at the same time is to attend events in your state association, in this case the Calif. 4Wheel Drive Association (www.cal4wheel.com).

Cal4Wheel has several events run by dedicated volunteers who work hard to help the Association grow.  Do your part by attending those you can fit in.  It's another way of doing the main things that keep our sport alive:  Join, Donate and Volunteer.  In this case, volunteer your time and rig for a fun weekend on the trails around great people.

More on events in Cal4 right here: https://cal4wheel.com/events
